Abstract

Online education is at present one of the most important challenges facing our society. The COVID-19 pandemic has only made this problem visible, as a consequence of other similar issues we are facing, such as the destruction of the environment, the lack of social justice, and the climate crisis. In this context, it is necessary to extend bioethics training to all people regardless of their professional category or occupation. In this paper we propose an online learning approach that focuses on deliberation, rather than on technological means, which we have called "e-deliberating", as opposed to "e-reading" and "e-learning". This approach can be an effective way to integrate bioethics in the education of all generations, as many international institutions such as the UNESCO are calling for. To this end, we begin by reviewing the situation of online learning in general and the reasons why it is convenient to incorporate bioethics into the virtual curriculum. Next, we will analyze the strengths and difficulties of online learning, using recently published papers on the massive use of new communication technologies. Finally, we focus on the importance of the human factor in “online deliberative learning” (e-deliberating), with a particular emphasis on the case of bioethics.
